Doctors Corner: Psychotropics 101 - On-demand Training

$150.00

Trainers: Board Certified Psychiatrist Dr. Pablo Gonzalez MD & Mauricio Verduzco LPC

With 1 in 5 Americans currently taking mental health medications, psychotropics continue to be among the most commonly prescribed medications in clinical practice. Many of these clients will likely also be engaged in therapy, and may often direct their questions about their psychotropics to their therapist. Having a basic understanding of psychotropics will better equip the therapist to be able to answer these questions and know when to direct patients back to their psychiatric prescriber.

This training is an introduction into psychotropic medications -- antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, mood stabilizers, and stimulants. We will review the medications in each of these classes of psychotropics, the disorders they are used to treat, the mechanism of action, and the common side effects. This training is intended for psychologists, licensed professional counselors, and social workers who want to increase their knowledge of psychotropic medications -- to better address client concerns about medications and to improve collaboration with psychiatric prescribers.

Objectives:

1) Identify commonly used psychotropic medications

2) Identify which disorders can be treated with these psychotropic medications

3) Describe the common risks and benefits associated with psychotropics

4) Understand the mechanism of actions for each class of psychotropics
